Tarpon, Tarpon, Tarpon
I have always heard from my friend Felipe Rodriguez, that I have to experience Cuba’s Rio Hatiguanico in October. He has raved about it time and time again. According to Felipe, the rainy season has just come to and end, and the seasonal influx of water has accumulated in the Zapata swamp. As the rains recede, water from the swamp drains into the Rio Hatiguanico, bringing with it an abundance of minnows and shrimp. This makes the main river come alive with fish often feeding near the surface, and susceptible to poppers or standard Tarpon flies cast on floating lines.
With all of this food, the Tarpon population in the river grows, and the fish concentrate in the main stem of the river. The juvenile fish are often joined by bigger Tarpon coming in from the nearby ocean. The Snook, Jacks and Snapper populations also join in the frenzy. I have seen this once before, and remember acres of fish feeding, and every cast bringing action and a different species.
SO, we are adding a trip concentrating on the river, and on these fish. Furthermore, Felipe will host the trip, meeting clients in Havana and then being with them throughout the entirety of the trip. Felipe is revered in Cuba, having guided there since the early 1990’s, and gaining fame from his vast knowledge, as well as his philanthropy. He is a living legend.
