LOS ROQUES, VENEZUELA
HOSTED DATES:
OCTOBER 23-30, 2027
* Trip price is $7160 per angler. Items included and not included listed in trip paperwork
The Travel: Exact travel details will be updated as things evolve, but we expect direct flights to Caracas from multiple US cities. In Caracas guests spend the night near the airport and then transfer the next morning direct to the island of Grand Roque. Returning guests should expect to depart to the US the same day they depart the island.
The Lodge: Guests stay at Acuerla boutique hotel, only a few minutes walk from the harbor. The hotel is beautifully decorated and quaint, with only eleven rooms. All have a/c , hot water, and Starlink wi-fi. The food here is elegantly prepared and presented, the result of Italian owners who love and understand good food and wine.
The Fishing: Clients have a six day fishing week. Los Roques has varied environments to fish, ranging from coral pancake flats, to oceanside beaches, to secluded lagoons. The most popular fish are Bonefish, although jacks and snapper are always present. Tarpon and Permit are also available depending upon tides and season
At long last, it looks like those of us who have been, or dreamed of going, will be able to travel to and experience Los Roques Venezuela. Although travel plans such as flights and visa processes are still not finalized, we do know that they are in the works and likely to allow US travelers to visit Venezuela in the very near future.
Knowing that, we have already planned our first return to Venezuela and Los Roques. This is a very unique destination and fishery. Although visitors are officially in Venezuela, the small island of Grand Roque is completely separate from the chaos of Caracas. It is an oasis, with a small local population, narrow sandy streets lined with boutique hotels and restaurants, and devoid of all motorized vehicles except a mini garbage truck which makes the rounds from time to time.
Our groups will stay at Acuerla Lodge, which is a small, Italian-owned, boutique hotel only a stone’s throw from where our skiffs are anchored. The entire hotel, rooms, and dining area are beautifully decorated. Amenities include a/c, Starlink wi-fi, and a rooftop terrace. Meals are excellent, with fresh fruit and vegetables. Dinners normally include a a variety of seafood and nice wines to accompany the dishes.
The fishing at Los Roques is renowned for a couple of reasons. The first is the there is so much bait in the waters here, that many species capitalize on the food source, and exist in many different environments. Bonefish are the most popular and prolific species, and grow big. Most are between three and seven pounds. They gorge on small minnows, and are pursued on both coral pancake flats, and white sandy beaches bordering the ocean.
Because of the bait, there are always predatory fish on the hunt. This includes a variety of Jacks and Snappers, as well as Barracuda. With higher tide cycles, there is also good opportunity for Permit which also average on the larger side. Tarpon fishing can also be excellent during these higher tides.
Los Roques is truly a gem. For anglers in the know, many have traveled there time after time, saying it is their favorite flats destination. We are really content to now have it as part of our offering, and excited to walk the white sandy beaches with rod in hand, and visit the wonderful people of the island.
