The Travel: Travel to El Pescador is fairly straightforward. Guests should arrive in Belize City where they are then transported by a domestic flight of 15 minutes to San Pedro. From the airport in San Pedro, it is about a 10 minute boat ride to the lodge.
The Lodge: El Pescador is well-known throughout the flyfishing world as a quality lodge and fishery. Rooms are very comfortable, and the lodge has many amenities including a pool, spa and beach access. There are also many activities that can be arrange for non-anglers. The lodge serves hardy and delicious snacks and meals.
The Fishing: We chose our week at El Pescador to coincide with the availability of mature Tarpon. These fish range in size from 30 to over 150 pounds. This time of year also means warmer water, and the Permit fishing is also excellent for those keen on pursuit of the Black Devil.
Belize is a popular destination for almost all adventure-travelers. It has it all; from great snorkeling and diving, to eco-tourism, to Mayan ruins. This means that it is a great country to visit for people with diverse interests.
The fishing in Belize has been famous for decades, and includes nearly the whole length of the country and its islands. Ambergris Caye has been an epicenter for fly anglers over the years, as well as a vacation spot for lovers of warm saltwater and white sandy beaches.
El Pescador is one of the most famous lodges in all of the Caribbean, and very often fully booked. There is fishing throughout the entire year, although it does change with the seasons. All flats species are available here, including Permit, Bonefish, Snook, Jacks, Snapper, Barracuda, and both resident and migratory Tarpon depending upon the season. Anglers fish from panga style boats, usually with two people per skiff rotating fishing time. Each panga has a forward casting deck and lean bar.
The guides at El Pescador are very experienced with both spin and fly anglers. With English as the official language of Belize, communication is much easier than many other destinations throughout the Caribbean.
Guides are serious, but friendly, and with daily communication will understand not only what you would like to accomplish that day, but will then be able to recommend the best options based on tides, sun, and general conditions.
We planned our week around the arrival of migrating, mature Tarpon. Although there are resident fish here throughout the year, we are in search of the bigger specimens, and they generally arrive in early Summer, staying until early Autumn. We will fish for them using both floating and light sinking lines depending upon the conditions. This is also an excellent time of year for anglers looking for opportunities at Permit. You should expect many chances if you put the time in. There are also Bonefish for anyone wanting to round out the day, but this is generally not the main quarry for groups this time of year.
There are great opportunities for Tarpon fishing throughout the southern US, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. But Belize stands out as a safe country, with activities for both anglers and non-anglers, all at a price that doesn’t break the bank.
