We have been traveling to Cuba for many years, and Jon has personally been to the island more than thirty times. We have hosted, and booked, Cuba fly fishing trips to every fishing destination offered. This includes areas controlled by three different outfitters. These trips include live-aboard boats in Gardens of the Queen, The Canarreos Archipelago, and the Zapata Peninsula. Other trips we also have hosted and arranged use land-based accommodations, both on the north shore of Cuba throughout the Gardens of the King archipelago, as well as the south on the Bag of Pigs. Some trips specialize in Cuba Tarpon fishing. Others concentrate on Cuba Permit and bonefish. And still others offer all flats species.
Cuba has been in the news in the recent past, and unfortunately not for good reasons. Their lack of resources, most notably fuel, has made life for everyday Cubans extremely difficult. Add to that the insecurity travelers are feeling, as well as policies we see from our current administration has made most Americans both skeptical of travel to Cuba. Currently, little has changed in terms of the legalities and itineraries of getting to Cuba. There are still legal categories of travel for US citizens, and there are many flights every day directly from the US to Cuba.
That said, we have continued to communicate with our Cuban friends and work partners. We know the situation, and keep up with it on a weekly basis. AND, we have continued to go, as recently as early June of 2026. In Playa Larga, little is noticeably different to a visitor. Life goes on. Children go to school and fisherman harvest octopus, snapper, and grouper from the Bay of Pigs. There are people playing on the beach and in the surf (local Cubans, very few tourists). The biggest inconvenience to our groups is a/c not being reliable at night.
