TARPON on the RIO HATIGUANICO!

Tarpon jumping near the mouth of the Rio Hatiguanico

We still have a few open spots for this very cool trip in October of this year. Tarpon come alive in Cuba’s Hatiguanico River as the summer rains recede and the swamp drains toward the ocean. Baitfish and shrimp are pushed into the main body of the river by this occurrence and Tarpon take full advantage. The feeder creeks of the river will have babies, while the river itself should have schools of teenagers on the feed. Many of these fish are between 10 and 30 pounds, although there always seem to be larger fish in the river. Sometimes, very large fish show up from the ocean to take advantage of the available bait.

This is a unique trip in Cuba. Guests will stay in the small Cuban town of Playa Larga, directly on the beach of the Bay of Pigs. Each morning the group will transfer an hour to the river, guided by Cubans who know this fishery inside and out. Our friend Felipe Rodriguez will host the trip, and will be an incredible source for guests in both the fishing, culture, and history of Cuba. Felipe is famous in this part of the island for his many years as a guide, as well as the founder of a flyfishing school which has trained most all of the professional guides in the area.

This is a great chance to target Tarpon, see life in Cuba, interact with an expert on the area, all at a great price and laid-back vibe.
